Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F or 43°C)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 8 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into small sticks (about 1/2 inch thick)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon dried Italian herbs (such as oregano and basil)
- 1 clove garlic, minced (optional)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for brushing)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried parsley
- Sea salt (to taste)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, instant yeast, salt, and sugar. This should take about 1 minute to ensure everything is well combined.
- Add the warm water and olive oil. Mix well with a wooden spoon or your hands until a rough dough forms, which should take about 2-3 minutes.
- Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should be soft and pliable but not sticky.
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
- Roll the dough out on a lightly floured surface until it is about 1/4 inch thick, which should take about 5 minutes.
- Evenly distribute the mozzarella sticks over the dough and sprinkle with Parmesan and Italian herbs. If using garlic, add it now.
- Fold the edges of the dough slightly and cut into even strips about 1 inch wide, which should take about 5 minutes.
- Grab the dough strips in the middle, twist them gently, and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. This should be done quickly, in about 5-10 minutes.
- Brush the bread twists with olive oil and sprinkle evenly with garlic powder, parsley, and sea salt.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown. Be sure to check regularly to avoid overbaking.

Keywords: Avoid over-kneading the dough as it can affect the bread's texture. Use a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier. Experiment with different cheeses for the filling, such as Gouda or Cheddar, for interesting flavor variations.
