Description
This vibrant Red Cabbage and Potato Skillet is a comforting dish perfect for chilly evenings. With its sweet and savory flavors, it’s a delightful addition to any meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 500 g firm potatoes (peeled and diced)
- 400 g red cabbage (fresh or jarred)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion (diced)
- 1 apple (diced)
- 2 tsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 0.5 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp cumin (optional)
- 1 tsp paprika
- Fresh parsley (for garnish)
Instructions
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into even cubes, ensuring they are not too small to prevent them from falling apart while frying. This should take about 5 minutes.
- If using fresh red cabbage, slice it into fine strips. If using jarred red cabbage, drain it and chop it if necessary. This will take about 3 minutes.
- Peel the onion and cut it into small cubes, aiming for even pieces to ensure uniform cooking. This will take about 2 minutes.
- Peel the apple and cut it into small pieces. The sweetness of the apple complements the flavor of the red cabbage very well. This should also take about 2 minutes.
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Make sure the oil is hot before adding the potatoes to avoid sticking. This will take about 2 minutes.
- Add the potato cubes to the skillet and fry for about 10 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy, stirring every few minutes to ensure even cooking.
- Once the potatoes are golden brown, add the diced onion and apple pieces and continue to fry until the onion becomes soft (about 5 minutes).
- Add the red cabbage to the skillet and mix well. Let everything sauté together for about 5 minutes until the cabbage is slightly wilted.
- Add the apple cider vinegar, sugar, salt, pepper, cumin (if using), and paprika. Mix well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes until the cabbage is tender and the flavors are well combined.
- Garnish the dish with freshly chopped parsley and serve immediately, ensuring the colors look fresh and inviting!

Keywords: Avoid cutting the potatoes too small, as they may fall apart while frying. Using a non-stick skillet helps prevent sticking. Adjust the amounts of apple cider vinegar and sugar to achieve the right balance between sweet and sour. For a spicier dish, consider adding cayenne pepper along with cumin.
